Following the shocking news that Alec Baldwin accidentally shot a colleague with a prop gun on a film set, the dangers of the movie industry have been pulled into sharp focus.

This sadly isn’t the first tragedy to have occurred on a Hollywood film set and accidents have occurred over the years.

Before the glamour and red carpets, film sets are known to be notoriously dangerous places with many fatal accidents having taken place.

Brandon Lee

Brandon Lee was a rising movie star starring in The Crow when he was shot dead during the filming of an action sequence.

The 28 year old son of Bruce Lee was tipped for Hollywood stardom when a faulty prop claimed his life.

A fragment of bullet lodged inside the gun was discharged when a blank was fired hitting Brandon in the stomach with the force of a full load.

Jon-Erik Hexum

Jon-Erik Hexum died on the set of TV series Cover Up in 1984 when he accidentally shot himself while playing with a prop gun between takes.

While the gun was loaded with blanks, it still fired wadding from inside the barrel instead of bullets.

The wadding hit him in the temple and caused a haemorrhage which led to his death age 26.

Vic Morrow

During filming of Twilight Zone: The Movie Vic Morrow and two child actors were killed by a stunt helicopter crash.

The helicopter’s blades decapitated the actor and Myca Dinh Le, 7, and crushed Renee Shin-Yi Chen, 6.

An inquiry later found that explosives had been too near to the helicopter caused by a failure of coordination. Film set safety regulations were seriously tightened following the tragedy.

In 2018, an uncontrollable fire took over the set of Edward Norton directed film, Motherless Brooklyn, leading to the death of a firefighter.

Michael Davidson, 37, who had been on the FDNY for 15 years, died on the set leaving behind a wife and four daughters.

A fire broke out in the basement of the set where actors dressed up in period costumes for a scene in the movie, set in the 1950s.

Harry O Connor

Vin Diesel’s stunt double Harry O Connor was killed filming a scene which involved parasailing down the Palacky Bridge in Prague.

The former Navy SEAL was killed aged 45 when he struck his head while shooting the treacherous scene.

Parts of O’Connor’s final moments made it into the film which is dedicated to his memory.

Stuntwoman Joi ‘SJ’ Harris was involved in a fatal motorcycle crash during the filming of Deadpool in 2017.
