Police in Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga are on the hunt for a group of robbers who stole cash, firearms and a security company vehicle at a bakery.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the robbery occurred just before midnight on Thursday.

Security guards were patrolling the premises around Sunbake Bakery when about eight armed robbers stormed onto the property.

“The suspects held the guards at gunpoint and robbed them of their company’s firearms and further instructed them to open the gate. All security guards were reportedly locked in an office whilst the suspects broke into the cash office and detonated some explosives to force open the safe,” Mohlala said.

The robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene with the security guards’ company bakkie in the direction of Hazyview, Mohlala added.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela called for the swift arrest of the robbers and the recovery of the stolen firearms.

“One loose firearm is a danger to the community. We must go all out and apprehend these suspects before they commit further crimes,” she said.
