Patrol officers, with the help of the south neighbourhood resource team, made the stop at about 11:10 p.m., the Ottawa Police Service said in a release Friday.

Smelling cannabis, an officer searched the vehicle under the Cannabis Control Act, police said, turning up unspecified substances, cash and a digital scale.

Officers gave chase when the teen passenger fled on foot, police said. When officers arrested him nearby, he’s alleged to have had a loaded handgun with extra ammunition.

The 20-year-old driver, who stayed in his seat and was arrested without incident, is charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, police said.

Both were scheduled to appear in court Friday.
